COSTA RICA GREEN FACES

Costa Rica is a small country in Central America that has been promoted in the last decade as international “green country” with only 51.100 km2 of the terrestrial surface. Its considered to be one of the 20 countries with most biodiversity in the world. Great part is due to its location in the tropical zone in the American continent (neotropical), where the diversity is much richer and abundant than in the colder regions and warmer regions, this produces more interaction between the species that home it.

An aspect that greatly calls international attention is that in spite of being a small country it conserves 52% of its territory to protect areas, this small area homes close to 500,000 species that represents 4% of the species at a worldwide level which 300,000 are only insects.

In the last years it has been involved in scandalous problems related to nature which has left in doubt its motto of being “Costa Rica Green” at an international level. The first was a conservationist named Paul Watson who brought out to the light the international traffic of shark fins to the Asian continent that with a documentary was transmitted worldwide level in various theaters.

Continued by the TIUNA ship that was found fishing in an illegal way within the 12 miles of the Coco Island.

The most recent event was the young activist Jairo Mora who dedicated himself to the protection of turtle nests and died in a mysterious way.

Problems that didn’t have any legal coincidences left much to say about the famous green country.

Costa Rica is a small country with big problem like any country, is necessary new regulations to prevent new cases like the before mentioned.
